Nyjer Morgan has done the impossible...make Milton Bradley look like Mother Teresa.
More and more, Nyjer Morgan is proving himself to be more of a guy who just wants to start trouble than play baseball. His latest episode came Wednesday vs. the Florida Marlins.
Combined, the two teams draw about the population of Emporia, VA or Titusville, FL. But for one night, all attention was on these two teams. Morgan was thrown behind by Marlins pitcher Chris Volstad. This after Volstad hit three other players prior to throwing behind Morgan. Morgan also at one point in the game stole two bases in the span of 3 pitches. This was when the Marlins were ahead big time on the Nats. 11 runs big time.
Morgan didn't take too kindly to being thrown behind him. He charged the mound where Volstad was waiting. As soon as an MMA match was about to ensue between Morgan and Volstad, in comes Gabby Sanchez to shift the odds in Florida's direction.
Out of nowhere, Sanchez gave Morgan a huge clothesline ensuing a bench-clearing brawl. If you listened to the Fox Sports Florida side of the story, they were probably calling Commissioner Bud Selig up at that moment saying that Morgan is a nut who needed to be kicked out of the league for a while. Morgan was anything but apologetic for causing a ruckus. Both he and Volstad would get ejected. Nats skipper Jim Riggleman and Fish skipper Edwin Rodriguez also took part in it as well. Riggleman was later tossed when another Marlin was hit. As Morgan exited the field, he was heckled by the 20 or so fans that were present at Sun Life Stadium. That 20 was enough for Morgan to start shouting expletives back in the direction of the South Beach faithful. He was later dissed in the media by the Fish' Wes Helms.
This year, Morgan has built a reputation as someone who simply just doesn't give a damn. Morgan has brushed catchers on the side as he's running in from 3rd. He's also done worse. The previous night in an extra inning game, he bulldozed into catcher Brett Hayes, in the process, separating the guy's shoulder ala Pete Rose/Ray Fosse All Star Game 1975. He's thrown baseballs at fans heads when he's played at the Phillies because obviously he hasn't studied Philly all that well. It takes thick skin to be able to handle Philly fans and this dude doesn't have that. Morgan was issued a suspension for that and he's appealing it. Apparently he doesn't think that the ball he threw had the chance to hit any fans.
One time, I remember earlier this year, a fly ball was hit in Morgan's direction as he was playing centerfield. Morgan tried to make a leaping catch up against the wall but failed. Most major leaguers would've found the ball and sailed it back into the infield. Not this guy. He basically threw his glove down and gave up on the play!
It's a shame because Morgan is a rather talented baseball player. There's not much difference between him and Milton Bradley. Both of these guys have a lot of talent but they do a lot of stupid mess that really takes away from what they could be as baseball players. Both of these dudes need to get it together and just play baseball at the level at which they know they can.
Plus, this is just another problem for the Nationals in addition to not competing for anything this year. This in addition to what happened to their hopefully soon-to-be-franchise player Stephen Strasburg equals a 2010 season that...well...is much like every other season for Washington ever since moving from Montreal. As for Morgan he can expect an even longer suspension and this basically threw away his case to get his previous suspension either shortened or overturned.
Maybe Dana White will start booking Nyjer Morgan in UFC bouts beginning this October.
