Florida Marlins Notes, Quotes 2008-04-30
--1B Mike Jacobs might not start until Friday because of a sprained right middle finger that he suffered during a swing Saturday. He was hoping he would be ready after Monday's off day but was scratched from Tuesday's lineup. Wes Helms made the start.

Jacobs pinch-hit in the ninth inning, striking out to end the game, which Florida lost 7-6 to the Dodgers.

"It's kind of a nagging thing," said Jacobs, who has agreed with manager Fredi Gonzalez and trainers that it's best for him to take time off when he feels the pain flare. "I think we're turning a corner."

--RHP Josh Johnson, who threw another bullpen session at Dolphin Stadium on Tuesday, is scheduled to face hitters this weekend in extended spring in Jupiter, Fla. It will be the first time since July that Johnson, who is recovering from Tommy John surgery, will pitch competitively against hitters. He's shooting for an August return.

--3B Jorge Cantu continues to swing a hot bat. He went 3-for-4 Tuesday to raise his average to .309.

--LHP Scott Olsen looks for his fourth win Wednesday when he faces the Dodgers. But that's a team he has never beaten -- he is 0-2 in two starts against Los Angeles with a 7.36 ERA.

--SS Hanley Ramirez will need three home runs Wednesday if he hopes to tie Gary Sheffield's club record for home runs in April. Sheffield hit 11, while Ramirez has eight. Ramirez went 1-for-3 with a single Tuesday night.

BY THE NUMBERS: 2 -- Home runs, out of 11 he has allowed in 96 career games, hit off LHP Reynel Pinto by left-handed hitters.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Now, I can concentrate on the movements that come with pitching and hitting without really having to exert all that energy into trying to focus. And it has given me some confidence at the plate, obviously." -- LHP Mark Hendrickson, on how offseason Lasik laser-eye surgery has helped him this season. He is 4-1 with a 3.68 ERA and 4-for-14 (.286) batting.
