Marlinshome.com | Florida Marlins News, marlins Scores, Game Recaps & Commentary - The Atlanta Braves placed starting pitcher Tim Hudson (elbow) on the 15-day disabled list Monday, July 28.
Hudson was removed from the team's game against the Marlins on Wednesday, July 23, after suffering from tightness in his right elbow. The right-hander said he didn't foresee any problems and didn't think it was going to be a big deal.He threw 68 pitches in six scoreless innings, but was removed. After the game, he admitted he felt discomfort in the elbow in the third inning; he felt a bit more discomfort in the fifth and sixth innings. At the time, Hudson said he threw more split-finger fastballs than he has in the past, which may have contributed to the tightness in his elbow.
Hudson threw a bullpen session in Philadelphia over the weekend and was scheduled to start Tuesday, July 29, against the Cardinals. He is 11-7 with a 3.17 ERA and 85 strikeouts in 22 starts this season.
Manager Bobby Cox said he did not want to risk further injury to Hudson, who is leading the team with 142 innings pitched this season. Cox said Hudson wanted to make the start but will instead miss a couple of starts and then should be fine. Cox said the injury hadn't improved since the game against the Marlins.
Starting pitcher Jorge Campillo is scheduled for Tuesday against the Cardinals. He is 5-4 with a 2.78 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 65 strikeouts in 27 games this season, including 13 starts.
Monday the Braves recalled starter Charlie Morton, whom the club had optioned over the weekend, in time to start that day against St Louis. He's 2-3 with a 6.00 and 1.53 WHIP in seven starts for Atlanta.
If you own Hudson, be sure to stash him on a bench or DL spot on your roster. Campillo could be a more than adequate replacement for fantasy owners in shallow leagues. He hasn't been nearly as effective at home (2-2, 4.17 ERA, 1.30 WHIP), though, and isn't an ideal play against the Cards. Morton has yet to go more than six innings in an outing, and he's worth fantasy consideration.
