The Braves scored more runs in Thursday's 4-2 win than they had in Jurrjens' previous four starts (three). That's how a pitcher with the fifth-best ERA in the major leagues coming in (1.89) gets stuck on two wins since April 12.
"Eventually we've got to get W's out of guys who are sporting sub-2.00 ERAs," said Casey Kotchman, who did his part by going 3-for-4 with a double, his first home run of the year and two RBIs.
Kotchman's solo homer in the third inning extended the Braves' lead to 3-1, allowing Jurrjens to withstand a two-homer game from Hanley Ramirez.
"It was awesome having the lead," said Jurrjens, now 3-2 with a 2.01 ERA after giving up two runs in seven innings. ". . . I was just trying to attack the hitters and make them get themselves out."
He and the Braves anticipated a happy charter ride to Philadelphia, where they expected the return of catcher Brian McCann tonight. McCann was eligible to come off the disabled list today.
David Ross, McCann's backup, hit a two-run homer in the second inning to continue the solid work he's done in McCann's absence.
Ross, who went 2-for-4, has hit safely in 11 of 15 starts behind the plate. The home run gave him three this season, which ties Chipper Jones, Jeff Francoeur and Kelly Johnson for the team lead.
"He's picking the team up, especially the bottom of the lineup getting big timely hits, having good [at-bats] and calling games," Jurrjens said. "And he's throwing people out. He's doing everything he can in replacing Brian. And that's difficult."
The homers by Ross and Kotchman and two hits each by the slumping Johnson and Jordan Schafer helped the Braves give Jones a day off without much notice.
Other than Ramirez's home runs, the only hit the Marlins managed off Jurrjens was a bloop single by Emilio Bonifacio to lead off the game.
Jurrjens had gone 31 1/3 innings without allowing a home run to start the season before giving up one to Lance Berkman in a rain-shortened outing Saturday. That was the first of three home runs in an eight-inning stretch, but Jurrjens said they were all on good pitches.
"Two great pitches [to Ramirez]," Jurrjens said. "I just take my hat off for him and say, 'You beat me this time.' Two perfect pitches. He was just seeing the ball good today."
Florida extended its streak to 20 games without a win from a starter. Anibal Sanchez was the last Marlins starter to win a game --- on April 16 against the Braves . Sanchez gave up four runs Thursday before leaving the game in the fifth inning with soreness in his throwing shoulder.
