Florida Marlins Roster Report 2009-05-06
Starting pitchers set a franchise record by going 18 consecutive games without recording a win. In the bullpen, RHP Kiko Calero has pitched well during a heavy workload; he leads the team in appearances. 1B Jorge Cantu is hitting well after being sidelined by a sore hand, but CF Cameron Maybin has been struggling.

PLAYER NEWS:

--RHP Scott Proctor plans to visit orthopedic surgeon James Andrews next week, a decision the team made after Proctor felt pain in his surgically repaired right elbow during a bullpen session Monday.

Proctor, who signed a one-year deal worth $750,000 in January, had surgery in October to repair a partially torn flexor tendon in the elbow. Visits to Andrews often result in Tommy John surgery, but it's unclear if the latest discomfort is related to new damage or is the result of scar tissue from October.

Either way, Proctor's availability this season is in doubt. He hasn't pitched since February. He'd been hoping to return by June 1.

--The Marlins displayed some sloppy baserunning in their two-game series with the Reds. A night after Alfredo Amezaga was picked off first base in the 11th inning, Cody Ross was picked off first by Edinson Volquez in the third inning.

C John Baker was thrown out at home trying to score from first on SS Hanley Ramirez's double in the fourth inning.

--The Marlins announced their organizational award winners for April: Ben Lasater of low Class A Greensboro was player of the month after hitting .410 with 13 doubles and five home runs and 18 RBIs. RHP Jarrett Santos was the pitcher of the month for allowing no runs on three hits in 20 innings for Class AA Jacksonville. He struck out 14 and had a 2-0 record.

--Tuesday's game had an oddity among the pitchers: Reds starter Edinson Volquez immediately precedes Marlins starter Chris Volstad on baseball's all-time roster, according to baseballreference.com.

Volquez is preceded by outfielder Clyde Vollmer (1942-54) while Volstad precedes dead-ball era pitcher Jake Volz (1901-08).

MEDICAL WATCH:

LHP Andrew Miller (strained right oblique) went on the 15-day disabled list April 21. The injury is not believed to be serious. He played long-toss April 28, and he threw a bullpen session May 2. He was scheduled to make a rehab start May 6.

RHP Scott Proctor (sore right elbow) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He will visit Dr. James Andrews during the week of May 11-17. He was hoping to return by June 1.
