UT Alfredo Amezaga was activated from the disabled list Sunday after missing most of spring training with a left knee sprain suffered in the World Baseball Classic. INF Andy Gonzalez was optioned to Class AAA New Orleans to make room for Amezaga.
PLAYER NEWS: --2B Dan Uggla has a chance this week to get into his home run stroke when the Marlins play three games in Atlanta. Uggla has more home runs against the Braves (14) than against any other team. Overall, Uggla has two this year. He hit a career-high 32 last year, including four against the Braves.
--The Marlins are extremely encouraged with the way RHP Josh Johnson has been pitching since he returned from Tommy John surgery last summer. Johnson is 2-0 with an 0.57 ERA this year after throwing a complete game Sunday against the Mets. Counting his 7-1 record since he returned from the surgery last July, he is 9-1 with 3.15 ERA in 16 starts. He has thrown the team's last two complete games (Aug. 27, 2008, in Atlanta and Sunday). He's the No. 2 starter behind RHP Ricky Nolasco, who's 1-1 with a 7.36 ERA in two starts.
--RHP Chris Volstad hopes to build off his first start when he faces the Braves on Tuesday. In his first start, against Washington, Volstad gave up a run in the first inning and threw 27 pitches before settling down to throw 65 pitches over four hitless innings. He struck out seven batters in his final four innings. Volstad was 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA in two starts last year against the Braves.
MEDICAL WATCH:
1B Jorge Cantu (sore left hand) left the April 8 game after being hit by a pitch. X-rays were negative, and he played April 10. He sat out again April 12.
RHP Scott Proctor (sore right elbow) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He won't return before mid-May.
RHP Rick VandenHurk (inflamed right elbow) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 28.
