Florida Marlins Roster Report 2009-04-11

Florida Marlins Roster Report 2009-04-11
The Marlins had an injury-plagued spring, and they opened the season with two relievers and a key bench player on the disabled list. If their starters can consistently go deep into games at least through April, they should be OK. But that's asking a lot, based on how they performed in March.

PLAYER NEWS:

--RHP Anibal Sanchez tossed five scoreless innings Friday but didn't get the win. It was the first scoreless start for Sanchez since his no-hitter against Arizona Sept. 6, 2006.

On Friday, Sanchez gave up four hits and walked three, pitching out of trouble in all five innings. Marlins starters are 3-0 with a 2.39 ERA over the team's first four games.

--UT Alfredo Amezaga could return to the Marlins on Sunday after playing a rehab game in the Florida State League with no physical setbacks. Amezaga tested his sprained left knee in center field Thursday. He was scheduled to play infield Friday and Saturday.

--RHP Ricky Nolasco would welcome another 15-win season, but he'd rather avoid surrendering another 28 home runs. Nolasco, who makes his second start Saturday against the Mets, gave up one home run in his first start against Washington.

Nolasco is 2-5 with a 6.27 ERA in 11 career games (nine starts) against the Mets. Of the eight homers he surrendered to the Mets in his career, five were hit in 2008.

--CF Cameron Maybin is struggling over the first four games, batting .154 (2 for 13). The rookie went into spring training as the Marlins' lead-off hitter until Emilio Bonifacio won both a starting job at 3B and the lead-off spot in the batting order. Maybin has hit second and eighth this year.

--RHP Ricky Nolasco's earned run average rose Tuesday, even though he didn't pitch that day. The official scorer made a ruling change that day on an error that was charged Monday to 3B Emilio Bonifacio on a hard line drive hit by Washington's Ryan Zimmerman. Because the error was changed to a hit, Nolasco's ERA went from 6.00 to 7.50.

MEDICAL WATCH:

1B Jorge Cantu (sore left hand) left the April 8 game after being hit by a pitch. X-rays were negative, and he played April 10.

RHP Scott Proctor (sore right elbow) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27.

INF Alfredo Amezaga (sprained left knee) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He began a rehab assignment with Class A Jupiter on April 9, and he could rejoin the Marlins on April 12.

RHP Rick VandenHurk (inflamed right elbow) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 28.
