Florida Marlins Roster Report 2009-04-08

Florida Marlins Roster Report 2009-04-08
The Marlins had an injury-plagued spring, and they opened the season with two relievers and a key bench player on the disabled list. If their starters can consistently go deep into games at least through April, they should be OK. But that's asking a lot, based on how they performed in March.

PLAYER NEWS:

--C Ronny Paulino had a strong debut for the Marlins, going 2-for-3 Tuesday with his 50th career double and first career triple. He's now batting .359 (94-for-262) against left-handers in his career.

--UT Alfredo Amezaga is getting ready to play some minor league games and could make his season debut for the Marlins on Sunday.

Amezaga (sprained left knee) will play for Class A Jupiter on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. He will play one game at second base, one at shortstop and one in the outfield.

--RHP Matt Lindstrom, Florida's closer, might be the biggest beneficiary of the Marlins' early offense. Lindstrom missed the last part of spring training with a strained right rotator cuff. He narrowly avoided opening the season on the disabled list. Although he was ready to pitch the ninth inning when the season started, the Marlins didn't need him, as they won their first two games by scores of 12-6 and 8-3.

--OF Ross Gload made his Marlins debut Tuesday, grounding out to first base as a pinch hitter in the eighth inning.

--RHP Leo Nunez made his Marlins debut Tuesday, allowing two runs in 1 1/3 relief innings. He gave up a two-run home run to Austin Kearns, who hit a towering shot that bounced off the upper deck in left field.

--RHP Chris Volstad, who starts Wednesday, insists he doesn't have any hometown jitters when he pitches at Dolphin Stadium. But the South Florida native has no explanation for the disparity in his stats on the road and at home.

At Dolphin Stadium, he is 2-3 with a 3.61 ERA in eight starts. On the road, he is 4-1 with a 1.95 ERA in seven games (six starts).
