Florida Marlins Roster Report 2009-04-07

Florida Marlins Roster Report 2009-04-07
The Marlins had an injury-plagued spring and could open the season with two relievers and a key bench player on the disabled list. If their starters can consistently go deep into games at least through April, they should be OK. But that's asking a lot, based on how they performed in March.

PLAYER NOTES:

--3B Emilio Bonifacio made quite an impression in his first game with the Marlins. He went 4-for-4 with three stolen bases and a two-run, inside-the-park home run in his first four at-bats Monday against the Nationals, his former team.

Bonifacio singled in his first two at-bats and stole two bases before dropping a drive over the head of center fielder Lastings Millledge, easily beating the throw home in the fourth inning. It was the first inside-the-park home run on opening day since Boston's Carl Yastrzemski had one on April 19, 1968, at Detroit.

--RHP Ricky Nolasco wasn't sharp, but he was still good enough to earn his first opening-day win. Nolasco, a 15-game winner last year, allowed four earned runs in six innings for the Marlins.

--SS Hanley Ramirez will bat third this year after hitting first over his first three seasons, but he'll still have the green light when it comes to stealing bases, manager Fredi Gonzalez said.

Ramirez stole 35 bases last year after stealing 51 in each of his first two seasons. "Just because he's hitting third, I don't want him to take anything (away) from his game," Gonzalez said.

--RHP Matt Lindstrom opened the season Monday by putting a tiny toy toilet in his locker -- to help him forget bad nights he may have this season as Florida's new closer.

"If I have a bad outing, I'll just flush the toilet," he said, explaining a button on the toilet that, when pressed, plays a recording of a flushing noise. Lindstrom borrowed the idea from a teammate in his minor league days with the Mets, Carlos Muniz.

--RHP Scott Proctor (sore right elbow) saw a doctor Monday and was cleared to start a throwing program Tuesday. He won't return until May 1 at the earliest.
