Florida Marlins Notes, Quotes 2008-09-11

Florida Marlins Notes, Quotes 2008-09-11
--The Marlins are relishing their spoiler's role again. They are 8 1/2 games out of first place.

"Our chances are pretty slim to none right now about getting into the postseason, so anybody we can take down with us we're going to have a little bit of extra effort," said 2B Dan Uggla, who went 2-for-5 with two doubles. "If we ain't going, we don't want anybody else to go."

--RHP Matt Lindstrom pitched his second 1-2-3 ninth inning Wednesday, but he missed a chance at a second straight save because Florida scored three runs in the top of the ninth in its 7-3 win over the Phillies.

--3B Dallas McPherson made his second start of the year. He went 1-for-3 with a double. He's hitting .286 since being called up last week from Class AAA Albuquerque.

--The Marlins doubled twice in first Wednesday and didn't score. SS Hanley Ramirez doubled to start the game but was thrown out at third when RF Luis Gonzalez grounded into a fielder's choice. 2B Dan Uggla followed with a double to put runners at second and third, but Brett Myers struck out 1B Mike Jacobs and LF Josh Willingham to end the inning.

--3B Jorge Cantu got the day off Wednesday to nurse aches on his back and right elbow. He was available to pinch-hit and is expected to be in the starting lineup Friday.

--RF Jeremy Hermida gave VIP treatment before Wednesday's game to 6-year-old Tyler Babel, who suffered a fractured orbital bone last month when he was struck by a foul ball off Hermida's bat a few rows up from first base in Philadelphia. Hermida hosted Tyler, his 8-year-old brother and their parents on a tour of the clubhouse and dugout at Citizens Bank Park. Tyler wasn't all that eager at first about the idea of returning to Citizens Bank Park. On Wednesday, the family watched the game from a suite.

"He was hesitant," said his mother, Annimarie Babel, "but he said, 'We're going to sit somewhere else.' I told him, 'We're going to be sitting in a very safe place.'"

BY THE NUMBERS: 1 -- Pitchers on the Marlins' staff with double-digit wins through Sept. 5, Ricky Nolasco (13).

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Obviously, they're not going to pay everybody; we all know that." -- LHP Scott Olsen, on Florida's 18 arbitration-eligible players this winter.
