Florida Marlins Notes, Quotes 2008-09-08

Florida Marlins Notes, Quotes 2008-09-08
--1B Mike Jacobs hit his 30th home run in the second inning Sunday, a day after 2B Dan Uggla hit his 30th home run. SS Hanley Ramirez needs one more to make the Marlins the second team in history with three infielders each hitting 30 homers.

The first team was the 2001 Oakland A's: 1B Jason Giambi (38), 3B Eric Chavez (32) and SS Miguel Tejada (31).

--RHP Kevin Gregg threw 30 pitches Sunday. The bigger test will be Monday when he feels how his sore left knee reacts to pregame fielding drills in Philadelphia.

Gregg said he believes he can return to action this week. When he does, he will pitch initially in non-save situations. The team's saves leader (29), Gregg hasn't pitched since Aug. 29 when he blew his ninth save by surrendering a grand slam to Mets CF Carlos Beltran.

--As a devout Mormon, RHP Matt Lindstrom doesn't drink any alcohol. Beer showers, however, are another matter.

After notching his first career save Friday night, Lindstrom was ushered into the shower room inside the Marlins clubhouse at Busch Stadium.

"Everyone got a couple of beers," Lindstrom said. "They shook them up and then popped them on me. Got in my eyes and stung a little bit, but it was fun."

--LHP Scott Olsen allowed four runs in six innings Saturday in Florida's 5-3 loss to the Cardinals to clinch his third consecutive season of double-digit losses.

Olsen (6-10) hasn't won since July 19, a span of nine starts.

"Wins and losses are irrelevant for a starting pitcher, so I try not to focus on that," he said. "I just try to go out every time and go deep in the ballgame and keep my team in it. Hasn't worked out for me at all this year."

--Rookie RHP Chris Volstad is following the Marlins' Class AA team on its run through the playoffs.

Volstad, who was 4-4 for the Carolina Mudcats before the Marlins called him up July 6, admitted to some mixed feelings about missing Carolina's playoff run.

"It's always nice to win," he said, "but it's nice to be up here, too."

BY THE NUMBERS: 1 -- Pitchers on the Marlins' staff with double-digit wins through Sept. 5, Ricky Nolasco (13).

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Obviously, they're not going to pay everybody; we all know that." -- LHP Scott Olsen, on Florida's 18 arbitration-eligible players this winter.
