The team wants to have Johnson throw at least 100 pitches in back-to-back rehab starts. He threw 104 Sunday while allowing five runs on 11 hits for the Mudcats.
"He came out of it OK health-wise, which is the most important thing," manager Fredi Gonzalez said about Sunday's outing. "We'll see how he comes out (Friday) and we'll re-evaluate."
That means Johnson will start in San Diego next week or wait until after the All-Star break.
--LF Josh Willingham had his biggest game Monday since returning from the disabled list June 24. He went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a game-winning home run in the 10th inning. It was his first home run since April 24.
--RHP Ryan Tucker looks like the top candidate to return to the minors once RHP Josh Johnson returns. Tucker allowed four runs in five innings to Washington, which entered the game with an NL-worst .238 batting average.
Tucker pitched well in his debut June 9 but has allowed 18 runs in 20 innings since then.
--SS Hanley Ramirez moved closer to becoming the first player elected to start an All-Star Game who has worn a Marlins uniform the entire season. Ramirez increased his lead over Houston's Miguel Tejada to more than 168,000 votes in Tuesday's balloting results, gaining about 100,000 the last week.
