Florida Marlins Notes, Quotes 2008-05-31

--SS Hanley Ramirez left Friday's game after suffering a left thumb bruise. X-rays were negative, but he was not able to squeeze his thumb after the game because of swelling. Manager Fredi Gonzalez said there was a chance Ramirez will play Saturday.

Ramirez took a hard grounder off his glove hand in the fourth inning and was able to make a force-out throw at second base. He left the game a half-inning later.

Ramirez, who is leading NL shortstops in All-Star voting, doubled over in pain after the play. He went 1-for-3 and was replaced by Alfredo Amezaga.

--LHP Mark Hendrickson was 7-1 in his last 10 starts before hitting a wall Friday in Florida's 12-3 loss in Philadelphia. Hendrickson gave up 10 runs on seven hits in 3 2/3 innings.

--LHP Scott Olsen reported no pain or discomfort after throwing in his bullpen Friday. Olsen took a pitch off his left thumb when he squared to bunt during Wednesday's game against the Mets.

Olsen's biggest relief is he is now able to text message, something he could not do Thursday when the thumb was sore and discolored.

"That was the biggest problem," he said. "I send about 150 a day. I never talk on the phone."

Olsen's next scheduled start is Monday in Atlanta.

--Wes Helms struck out swinging as a pinch hitter to end Friday's game on his return to Philadelphia for the first time since the Phillies traded him to the Marlins on April 5.

The Phillies are paying Helms' $2.15 million salary this season and the Marlins are responsible for his $750,000 buyout club option in 2009. Helms hit .246 in 112 games last season for the Phillies.

--RHP Ricky Nolasco, who starts Saturday in Philadelphia, has pitched well lately. He has won three consecutive decisions and has allowed three or fewer earned runs in each of his last four starts. He is 1-2 with a 6.60 ERA in five games against the Phillies.

Nolasco, who is among the leaders in home runs allowed with nine, will face the team with the most home runs in baseball.

BY THE NUMBERS: 12 -- Home runs this month for 2B Dan Uggla, the most in any month by a Marlins player in franchise history.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Everybody is looking at you like, 'These guys aren't any good.' But we're at the top of the division, where everybody wants to be." -- RHP Kevin Gregg.
