--SS Hanley Ramirez reported to camp at 225 pounds, up 25 from last season. However, he said he extra weight was in his upper body thanks to his offseason workouts.
--2B Dan Uggla will make $5.35 million this year after winning his arbitration case against the team, which had offered $4.4 million. Only SS Hanley Ramirez ($5.5 million) has a high salary on the Marlins, who have a team payroll of just over $33 million. --LHP Renyel Pinto said he will not pitch for his native Venezuela in the World Baseball Classic. Pinto said he wants to focus on winning a roster spot after an inconsistent 2008 season.
--Manager Fredi Gonzalez said he's not concerned that the Marlins have no plans yet to discuss a contract extension. Gonzalez is entering the final year of a three-year contract. He guided Florida to 84 wins last year after posting a 71-91 record as a rookie skipper in 2007.
--RHP Harvey Garcia is being restricted from normal activity because of what the Marlins described as right shoulder discomfort. Garcia made his debut in 2007 but missed all of 2008 with shoulder problems.
--Manager Fredi Gonzalez said he's got a stack of lineups in his office. He said he'd unveil his preferred lineup by Feb. 25, the day of Florida's first Grapefruit League game. "You want to do what's best for the team and leave the individual out of it," he said. "I think there's one lineup I like for many different reasons. The first spring training game you'll see it."
