Florida Marlins Notes, Quotes 2008-11-16
--As expected, Florida traded RHP Kevin Gregg, the fourth arbitration-eligible player the Marlins have dealt in the last two weeks. Gregg was sent to the Cubs for Class AA RHP Jose Ceda.

"Jose is a big, strong kid with a real live arm," Marlins baseball operations president Larry Beinfest said. "We think he can help us in the back end of our bullpen in the very near future, if not right away."

Gregg stands to make more than $4 million in arbitration next year. He notched 62 saves for the Marlins over the past two seasons but he blew nine saves in 2008.

--OF Cody Ross is the top candidate to play left field now that Josh Willingham has been traded, but it's still early and the Marlins could make a trade or free agent signing to fill that hole.

--RHP Henry Owens, 29, was suspended 50 games for testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance, Major League Baseball announced. A reliever on Florida's Class AAA roster, Owens is trying to return from shoulder injuries. He hasn't pitched in the majors since June 2007.

--Manager Fredi Gonzalez finished third in voting for the National League Manager of the Year Award, which went to Cubs skipper Lou Piniella. Gonzalez, in his second year, guided the Marlins to an 84-77 record and a third-place finish in the NL East. Florida had finished the 2007 season last with 91 losses.

Gonzalez, who garnered five first-place votes and 48 points overall, is entering the last year of a three-year contract. But Marlins baseball operations president Larry Beinfest wouldn't say whether the team would consider extending that deal. "In terms of contract stuff, we'll leave that in-house," he said.

--OF Brett Carroll suffered a broken wrist when he was hit by a pitch in the Dominican winter league, but he is expected to be ready for spring training.

BY THE NUMBERS: 11 -- Arbitration-eligible players on the Marlins' roster.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "You never know what could have happened if they kept all of us together, but it's part of the business." -- LF Josh Willingham, after being traded to Washington.
