--1B Mike Jacobs went into Friday batting a team-high .354 (17 for 48) with seven homers and 13 RBIs since Aug. 23 after enduring an 0-for-13 slide.
--2B Dan Uggla has had an inconsistent season but at least he's showing signs of having a better September than he did last year. After going 1-for-3 Friday, he is batting .282 (11 for 39) with two homers and nine RBIs. Last year, Uggla hit .214 in September.
--Former Marlin Jeff Conine, who retired last year, is about to embark on his second career -- in the broadcast booth. Conine made a guest appearance during the fifth and sixth inning of the Marlins' television broadcast Friday. That was a warm-up of sort. Conine will serve as a substitute analyst for Tommy Hutton during the Phillies series Sept. 19-21. (Hutton will be out of town attending a family wedding.).
BY THE NUMBERS: 5 -- Players with 20 home runs this year for the first time in franchise history (Dan Uggla, Mike Jacobs, Hanley Ramirez, Jorge Cantu and Cody Ross).
QUOTE TO NOTE: "Our chances are pretty slim-to-none right now about getting into the post-season, so anybody we can take down with us we're going to have a little bit of extra effort. If we ain't going, we don't want anybody else to go." -- 2B Dan Uggla, on the Marlins' attitude toward contending teams in September.
