With three weeks left in the season, Ramirez leads the team with 81 walks -- tied for fifth in the National League and by far the most in his career.
Last year, Ramirez drew 52 walks. But that's when the lineup featured Cabrera, who led the Marlins with 79 walks.
"That's the only explanation I can give you," manager Fredi Gonzalez said, explaining that opposing teams view Ramirez as the biggest threat in the lineup. "I'm guessing they want to make the other guys beat them."
Catcher John Baker on Friday made his second straight start batting second behind Ramirez. Baker has batted .333 (29 for 87) over his last 29 games.
"He draws walked. He takes pitches. And he does pretty good (for) protection for Hanley later on in the game," Gonzalez said.
MARLINS 4, CARDINALS 1 (11 innings): 2B Dan Uggla delivered an RBI single with two outs in the 11th to score Hanley Ramirez with the go-ahead run. Cody Ross singled to score two more. Mike Jacobs tied the game for Florida when he hit his 29th home run with one out in the ninth. RHP Matt Lindstrom picked up his first career save. RHP Ricky Nolasco allowed one run on six hits in seven innings.
