Florida Marlins Inside Pitch 2008-09-05
With closer Kevin Gregg sidelined due to left knee inflammation, the Marlins have been auditioning closers for next year. So far, no one has grabbed the job.

Right-hander Matt Lindstrom has had two opportunities in the past week. He pitched a scoreless ninth inning Monday to get a win but allowed two runs the next day in the ninth inning of a tie game to get the loss.

On Wednesday, right-hander Joe Nelson got the ball with a two-run lead and picked up his first save with a 1-2-3 ninth. Nelson's last save had come on Sept. 27, 2006.

Lindstrom didn't get the ball Wednesday because the team wanted to give him some time off after pitching for back-to-back days.

Meanwhile, Gregg hopes to pitch again this month. He hopes to throw off a bullpen mound this weekend in St. Louis.

"The main thing the first few days was to get the swelling down on the knee," said Gregg, who could get at least $2 million through arbitration this winter. "Now I'm throwing a little more every day. I can't shut my arm down for a week. If I did, I wouldn't be able to come back this year."
