The Marlins went into Sunday six games out of first place and just one game over .500 after being 1-1/2 games out of first on Aug. 13. Gregg has suffered three blown saves and four losses with a 16.20 ERA in seven games since Aug. 15.
"Unfortunately, I think I made a bad decision of trying to play through some inflammation in my knee and it has cost me and cost the team a couple of games here," said Gregg.
Right-handers Matt Lindstrom and Joe Nelson will get the ball in save situations until Gregg returns.
Gregg saved a career-high 32 games in 36 chances last year while posting a 3.54 ERA in 84 innings. He signed a $2.5-million contract for the 2008 season.
This year he has converted 29 saves, fourth in the NL. But he leads relievers in both leagues with nine blown saves. He has a 3.79 ERA in 61 2/3 innings. After posting a 2.60 ERA before the All Star break, he has posted a 7.20 ERA in the second half.
Manager Fredi Gonzalez was asked if he thought Gregg should have been honest about the degree of his knee discomfort before he went out and blew two saves.
"You know what? At this stage of the season you want guys who want to take the ball," Gonzalez said. "He felt like he could get through it. What Kevin Gregg has done for us over the last two years... if he tells me he can go, you want him in that foxhole with you."
METS 6, MARLINS 2: Florida scored two runs in the first inning against Pedro Martinez but LHP Scott Olsen gave up three solo home runs Sunday before allowing three more runs in the seventh. The Marlins got 10 hits but left 10 runners on base.
