The University of Miami, which vacated the Orange Bowl, played its first official home game at Dolphin Stadium on Thursday. On Friday, the Marlins played the Mets on the same chewed-up field.
Before pregame batting practice, football yard lines were still visible. But Marlins coaches and players had few complaints about the playing condition.
"Our grounds crew does a good job of turning it over," manager Fredi Gonzalez said.
The Marlins also share the field with the Miami Dolphins. In past years, players have complained about a chewed-up infield when Dolphin Stadium is converted back for baseball during exhibition football.
"I know we have a good grounds crew, but we have thin grass and the infield already is fast," first baseman Mike Jacobs said. "Hopefully it won't get trampled up too much."
The Marlins have the worst fielding percentage (.979) in the NL and lead the league with 102 errors.
METS 5, MARLINS 4: For the second time in four games, RHP Kevin Gregg suffered a spectacular ninth-inning meltdown. With two outs and two strikes on Luis Castillo, Gregg was one strike away from giving Florida a 2-1 win. But he gave up two straight hits and hit Carlos Delgado with a pitch before Carlos Beltran smacked a grand slam. Florida rallied for two runs in the ninth but made the final out with runners at second and third. On Tuesday, Florida led 9-6 when Gregg gave up four runs in the bottom of the ninth in Atlanta.
