Rookie right-hander Chris Volstad has pitched 91 innings since being promoted to the majors, and 141 all told this season. But the Marlins don't plan to cut his season short just yet.

"If he's OK and he's not showing any signs that we have to shut him down, we'll just keep on running him out there," manager Fredi Gonzalez said Thursday. "He's strong and he's capable of doing it."

Last year, Volstad logged a career high 168 2/3 innings for Class A Jupiter and Class AA Carolina.

Volstad is 4-3 with a 3.42 ERA in eight starts since being called up from Carolina in July. He'll make the biggest start of his rookie season Friday when he faces the Mets.

But Gonzalez does not expect the rookie to become wide eyed in a pennant race.

"For a 21-year-old, I think he's about as composed as I've seen any veteran guy on the mound," Gonzalez said.

BRAVES 4, MARLINS 2: RHP Anibal Sanchez allowed four hits in five innings but one particular hit was enough to send him to his third loss. He have up a three-run home run in the fifth inning to Braves C Brian McCann, who was in a 1-for-16 slump. Sanchez walked five and struck out two. The Marlins lost two of three to the Braves and finished an important road trip with just four wins in nine games.
