The Marlins will try to end a three-game skid without their best hitter.
Manager Fredi Gonzalez said he doubts Jorge Cantu, hitting .341, will start Friday. Gonzalez wants to give Cantu an extra day to rest his sore left wrist. Cantu left the team in Pittsburgh to have his hand and wrist examined Wednesday in South Florida. A doctor found no fracture or ligament tears, which was good news.
"Just a bruise. Nothing major," Gonzalez said. "He's a tough sonofagun. He wants to get in there (Friday), but I'll maybe give him an extra day."
That would mean three consecutive games without Cantu, who was scratched from Tuesday's lineup.
His hand has bothered him since April 8, when he was hit by a pitch. He aggravated it a few days later colliding with the Mets' Luis Castillo. Cantu has played through the discomfort, but he said the pain intensified because of cold weather in Pittsburgh.
