Florida Marlins Inside Pitch 2008-09-24

Florida Marlins Inside Pitch 2008-09-24
Ricky Nolasco has emerged as more than just the ace of the rotation. He's also the staff's workhorse.

Nolasco has pitched 205 1/3 innings this year, and Scott Olsen is approaching 200 innings -- he's at 195 2/3 after throwing five innings Tuesday.

If Olsen can pitch at least 4 1/3 innings in his final start Sunday, it would give the Marlins two 200-inning starters for the first time since 2005. That year, Dontrelle Willis threw 236 1/3 innings and A.J. Burnett pitched 209.

"That's a big mark for a young pitcher," manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "It means you're not missing a start and you're going deep into games."

Olsen was sick but said he would definitely make his final start Sunday.

NATIONALS 9, MARLINS 4: The Marlins were eliminated from any chance of a playoff berth by losing to a team that has beaten them just three times in 16 games this year. Scott Olsen allowed four runs, three earned, in five innings while battling flu-like symptoms. Josh Willingham and Cody Ross each homered, giving the Marlins a franchise record of 203 homers in a season.
