Rookie right-hander Chris Volstad is experiencing another career first: pitching in September.

Volstad is 1-1 with a 2.86 ERA in three starts this month. He has pitched 22 innings and walked seven while striking out 11, including his latest start on Sunday. He allowed three runs (two earned) in five innings against the Phillies.

With his performance Sunday, Volstad set a personal season high for innings pitched -- 169 2/3. He has thrown 78 1/3 with the Marlins after tossing 91 for Class AA Carolina. Last year he pitched 168 2/3 innings in the minor leagues.

Volstad's performance in September is significant because it's a measure of his endurance. He's a 21-year-old rookie whom the Marlins will rely on next year as one of the team's top three starters.

"He's one of those guys who don't come around very often and they're special," manager Fredi Gonzalez said.

PHILLIES 5, MARLINS 3: The Marlins' postseason hopes are on life support after their second consecutive loss to the Phillies. RHP Chris Volstad allowed three runs (two earned) in five innings, but RHP Joe Nelson gave up a two-run home run to Pedro Feliz in the eighth inning. Florida left 13 runners on base.
