The Dodgers were down 4-3 to the favored A's in the ninth inning of Game 1 of the World Series. Battling a knee injury, Kirk Gibson limped to the plate to pinch-hit with one man on and Dennis Eckersley on the mound. He worked a 3-2 count then launched the ball into the right field stands to win the game. The Dodgers rode momentum from that emotional moment to win the World Series in five games. Gibson circling the bases with a pronounced limp and his fist in the air is an amazing sight no baseball fan will forget.

In the worst-to-first World Series that pitted the Twins against the Braves, Atlanta was up three games to two as Game 6 went into extra innings. Twins beloved star Kirby Puckett led off the bottom of the 11th inning with a home run to force Game 7, which the Twins won for the title. Puckett is remembered for that home run and joyfully bounding around the bases, but he dominated Game 6. He made a great, run-saving catch in the third inning and had three hits, three RBI and two runs scored in the 4-3 victory.

The Blue Jays were the defending World Series champions, but the Phillies were desperately trying to force a Game 7 and keep Toronto from winning back-to-back titles. With Philly reliever Mitch Williams on the mound and the Jays down one run in Game 6, Carter stepped to the plate in the bottom of the ninth. He turned on a 2-2 pitch for a three-run, Series-winning home run. It was only the second time a World Series was won on a home run as Carter joined Bill Mazeroski in the history books.

The Yankees were down two games to one in the series and 6-0 in Game 4. Might as well call the Braves one win away from winning it all. But then the Yankees scored three in the sixth. Now it's the eighth and up steps Jim Leyritz to face Mark Wohlers with two men on. Leyritz put the ball in the leftfield seats. The Yankees went on to win the game in 10 and win that World Series and three more in the next four years. Leyritz' shot only tied the game but it set the Yankees dynasty in motion.

People may not talk about this one as much. It was the Marlins after all...against the Indians. Where were the big markets and heavy hitters that October? But this was a great series, a great game and a huge moment. In the bottom of the 11th inning of Game 7, game tied at 2, Edgar Renteria stepped in with two outs and the bases loaded and lined a single to win the Series for Florida. So forget the teams. This was drama, good baseball, clutch hitting and one big moment on the biggest stage.

It's always the big hit or the home run robbing catch. Not this time. On this night at Yankee Stadium, the play most remembered was a backhanded flip from Derek Jeter to Jorge Posada to nail Oakland's Jeremy Giambi at the plate and keep the Yankees 1-0 lead in Game 3 of the ALDS, a series where they were already down 2-0. Jeter made one of the best purely instinctive plays in postseason history. The Yankees won this series and the next before losing the World Series. Without Jeter's stunning play, they may never get to Game 4 of the ALDS.

Mariano Rivera didn't blow saves. He wouldn't lose Game 7 of the World Series with the Yankees up a run in the ninth. He certainly wouldn't lose this one in 2001 against the Diamondbacks when New York was riding an emotional wave following Sept. 11. But the unimaginable happened. A hit, a Rivera error, another hit and the game was tied. Rivera then hit a batter and with the bases loaded and one out, Luis Gonzalez pushed Rivera's pitch onto the outfield grass to score the Series-winning run. A little broken-bat hit but a huge World Series moment.
